How to Make a Left 4 Dead 2 Server

A complete walkthrough for running your own Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server — install it with SteamCMD, open the port, tune server.cfg and even allow more than four survivors in a campaign. L4D2 runs on the Source engine, so it's light and familiar. Plus the one-click hosted route.

Left 4 Dead 2 has a free dedicated server (Steam app 222860) on the Source engine — light, stable and native on Linux via anonymous SteamCMD. It uses port 27015 (with the 27015-27050 range), and with a few convars you can even run campaigns with more than four survivors. You can self-host it or use a managed host.

This guide covers the self-hosted SteamCMD route step by step.

Before you start

What you'll need

A quick checklist before you begin — have these ready and the rest is easy.

  • A machine to run the server, or a host for 24/7 uptime.
  • SteamCMD, to download the free server (app 222860).
  • server.cfg configured (hostname, rcon, sv_lan 0).
  • Open port: UDP 27015 (27015-27050 range).
  • (Optional) Metamod + SourceMod for extra players/admin.
Step by step

Set up a Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server, step by step

1

Choose self-host or a managed host

The server is free and light, but self-hosting needs a machine on 24/7 and port-forwarding. A managed host gives you an always-online server in minutes. Want zero hassle? Pick a host and skip to step 4.

2

Install with SteamCMD

The L4D2 dedicated server is Steam app 222860 — a free, anonymous download.

steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir ./l4d2 +app_update 222860 validate +quit
3

Configure server.cfg

Set the hostname, rcon_password, sv_lan 0 and gameplay convars in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg. This controls the whole server.

hostname "My ESAGAMES L4D2 Server"
rcon_password "changeme"
sv_lan 0
4

Launch with a map & game mode

Start srcds with a starting campaign map and game mode (coop, versus, survival, scavenge).

./srcds_run -game left4dead2 +map c1m1_hotel +sv_gametypes coop -port 27015
5

Open the port

Forward UDP 27015 (game + query; the 27015-27050 range covers Source). On a managed host this is opened for you.

27015/udp game + query

(Optional) Allow more than 4 survivors

Vanilla co-op caps at 4 survivors. With convars like sv_maxplayers and a mutation/plugin (or SourceMod), you can run 5-8+ player campaigns — a popular community setup.

Best practices

Run a solid co-op server

Source is light

L4D2 runs on 1-2 GB and a modest core. It's one of the lighter servers to host — spend on a fast core and low ping.

Add SourceMod for more players

The classic community setup: SourceMod + a plugin to allow 5-8+ survivors, plus admin tools. It's what most custom L4D2 servers run.

Low ping matters

L4D2 is fast-paced co-op. Host close to your group on a well-peered network for crisp hit-registration.

Protect a public server

Public Source servers get attacked. A managed host puts a filtered IP in front so a booter can't end your run.

Troubleshooting

Common problems & fixes

Hit a snag? These are the issues people run into most — and how to solve them.

The server isn't listed / can't be found

UDP 27015 isn't open, or sv_lan is 1. Forward the port and set sv_lan 0.

Only 4 players can join co-op

That's the vanilla cap. Install SourceMod + a plugin and raise sv_maxplayers to allow more survivors.

Plugins don't work

Metamod:Source or SourceMod isn't installed correctly. Check left4dead2/addons and the plugin load order.

Players report lag

Host closer to your group and on a faster core. Source is light, so lag is usually ping/route, not CPU.

Skip the setup — host it with ESAGAMES

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to own Left 4 Dead 2 to host a server?

No. The dedicated server (Steam app 222860) is a free, anonymous download, separate from the game. You only need the game on the machines that play.

What port does a Left 4 Dead 2 server use?

UDP 27015 by default, within the Source 27015-27050 range for game and query. Forward it so players can find and join.

How do I get more than 4 players in an L4D2 campaign?

Vanilla co-op caps at 4 survivors. Install SourceMod plus a plugin (or use a mutation) and raise sv_maxplayers to run 5-8+ player campaigns — the standard community setup.

How much hardware does an L4D2 server need?

Very little — 1-2 GB of RAM and a modest core run a full server. It's a light Source game; a fast core and low ping matter more than raw power.

How do I add mods or admin tools to L4D2?

Install Metamod:Source and SourceMod into left4dead2/addons, then add plugins for admin, extra players, custom modes and more. It's the standard L4D2 modding stack.

Is running an L4D2 server allowed?

Yes — Valve provides the official dedicated server via SteamCMD. Follow Valve's server guidelines and terms.
