Better MC comes in four editions on two Minecraft versions and three loaders. Picking the right one is the first server decision.

Better MC (BMC) by Luna Pixel Studios is a vanilla-plus pack: it keeps Minecraft recognisable and fills it with structures, mobs and quality-of-life mods. BMC5, the newest edition, runs Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge with more than 320 mods, over 300 new dungeons and structures, bosses, Waystones and rideable dragons. BMC4 stays on Forge 1.20.1 with more than 350 mods, 100+ quests and the Aether dimension.

Two Fabric editions exist as well: BMC3 on 1.21.1 and BMC2 on 1.20.1. Java follows the Minecraft version — Java 21 for the 1.21.1 editions, Java 17 for 1.20.1. Every edition has an official server pack on CurseForge (BMC5 v53, BMC4 v61, BMC3 v45 and BMC2 v40 at the time of writing); use CurseForge rather than Modrinth, where BMC5 stopped updating at v31.

Better MC is demanding in a different way from tech packs. There is little automation, but structure mods such as the YUNG's series and Moog's Voyager Structures fill new terrain with dungeons and structures, so exploring players generate a lot of world. RAM and fast storage go into chunks rather than machines.
