Everything your GregTech: New Horizons server needs

GTNH is a 1.7.10 marathon measured in months: single-thread speed, steady RAM and safe updates matter more than anything else.

GregTech: New Horizons (GTNH) is the expert pack from the GT New Horizons team, built on Minecraft 1.7.10 and developed for more than a decade. More than 200 mods and over 3,500 quests take you through GregTech's voltage tiers, from the stone age to space. The current stable release is 2.8.4, with 2.9.0 in beta.

There are two server builds: one for Java 8 and one for Java 17 and newer (Java 25 works from GTNH 2.8). The GTNH wiki strongly recommends the Java 17+ build for its better garbage collection and performance, and the zip must match the Java the server runs or it fails to start. The version number must also match exactly between the server and every player.

GTNH gets heavy over time rather than with headcount. Chunk-loaded multiblocks and processing lines keep running while nobody is online, and each tier adds more machines that tick. The wiki sizes a server at 6 GB plus about 0.5 GB per extra player early on, and 6 GB plus 1 GB per extra player from the UV tier.

GTNH servers here run on high-clock CPUs with NVMe SSDs in Frankfurt, behind multi-Tbps Anti-DDoS, and stay online 24/7 so a chunk-loaded base keeps producing.

  • Single-thread speed first

The GTNH wiki lists single-thread CPU frequency first among server specs, because Minecraft does not take advantage of multiple cores. Our nodes run high-clock CPUs.

  • Java 17+ server build

Run the recommended Java 17+ server zip, started through lwjgl3ify, rather than the Java 8 build the wiki keeps for special hybrid setups.

  • Room for ServerUtilities backups

GTNH ships ServerUtilities with world backups enabled. Each backup is about the size of the world, so fast NVMe space matters as the save grows.

  • Chunk loading switched on

Chunk claiming and loading stay off until you set chunk_claiming and chunk_loading to true in serverutilities.cfg — needed for production while players are offline.

  • RWG world generation

GTNH expects the level type to stay on RWG (Realistic World Gen) in server.properties. Leave it as the pack ships it.

  • Always on for a long run

Uptime around the clock, Frankfurt Anti-DDoS and in-house support for a world you will play for months.

How to make a GregTech: New Horizons server

From zero to online in four steps — no technical experience required.

  1. Size the plan

Start at 6 GB, the value GTNH's start scripts use, and add memory as players join or you reach UV.

  2. Upload the matching server zip

Use the one-click install, or download the Java 17-25 server pack from gtnewhorizons.com/downloads — the official source — and run it on a matching Java.

  3. First start and EULA

Set eula=true and let the first start finish; the first GTNH start takes a while.

  4. Enable chunk loading and invite

Turn on chunk_claiming and chunk_loading in serverutilities.cfg, then share the exact version (2.8.4) with your team.

The GTNH default — the start scripts ship with -Xms6G -Xmx6G.

  • Community

    8 GBRAM

    3–5 players

Early and mid game for a small team: 6 GB plus 0.5 GB per extra player.

  • Power

    10 GB+RAM

    6+ players

UV tier and beyond, where the wiki adds about 1 GB per extra player.

Updating GTNH

How to update a GTNH server without losing the world

The GTNH wiki procedure, in short. Update one major version at a time — 2.6 to 2.7 to 2.8, never straight across:

  • Back up the whole server folder
  • Delete config, libraries, mods (and resources, scripts if present)
  • Java 17+: also remove java9args.txt, lwjgl3ify-forgePatches.jar and the startserver-java9 scripts
  • Copy in the same files from the new server zip
  • Restore config/JourneyMapServer from the backup
  • Re-apply config edits by hand — do not paste old config folders back
  • Answer /fml confirm if asked about removed blocks

How our protection works

GregTech: New Horizons hosting questions, answered

How much RAM does a GregTech: New Horizons server need?

The GTNH wiki recommends 6 GB plus about 0.5 GB per extra player in the early game, and 6 GB plus 1 GB per extra player from UV onwards; the start scripts default to 6 GB. So 6 GB for a solo player or pair, 8 GB for a small team, and 10 GB or more for a larger group deep into the tiers.

Should a GTNH server use Java 8 or Java 17+?

Java 17 or newer. The wiki strongly recommends the Java 17+ server build for better garbage collection and performance, and Java 25 is supported from GTNH 2.8. Download the server zip that matches your Java or the server will not start. Players can use either Java in their own launcher.

Why is CPU so important for GTNH?

GTNH worlds fill up with multiblocks and processing chains that tick every game tick, and that work runs on a single thread. The wiki lists single-thread CPU frequency first among server specs, which is why a high-clock CPU keeps TPS stable late in the game.

How many players does a GTNH server suit?

GTNH is usually played solo or in small committed groups. One to five players is typical; bigger groups work too, but plan an extra gigabyte per player once you reach UV.

Do players need exactly the same GTNH version?

Yes. The version number, for example 2.8.4, must match exactly between the server and every client. When the server updates, all players update too.

Do you install GTNH for me?

Yes — GregTech: New Horizons is a one-click install from the panel. You can also upload the official server zip from gtnewhorizons.com with the file manager.

Is the server always online?

Yes. It runs 24/7, so chunk-loaded machines keep working between sessions, and it sits behind our multi-Tbps Frankfurt filtering.

How much does GregTech: New Horizons server hosting cost?

A GregTech: New Horizons server runs on our Minecraft plans, which start from €13.00 per month with one-click modpack install and Anti-DDoS included. Bigger packs and more players need more RAM, so choose the plan to match.
