Everything your Cobblemon server needs

Cobblemon is a single open-source mod rather than a 400-mod pack, so a server is light — and most tuning happens in its spawning config.

Cobblemon is the open-source Pokémon mod by Cobbled Studios, released under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. It adds more than 800 Pokémon with battles powered by the Pokémon Showdown engine, and the 1.8.0 "Make Your Move" update (September 2026) added Alpha Pokémon, craftable TMs and dozens of new habitat structures. It is built for Minecraft 1.21.1 in both Fabric and NeoForge versions; the previous 1.5.2 line covered 1.20.1.

On Minecraft 1.21.1 the server runs Java 21. The dependency depends on the loader: the Fabric build needs Fabric API, the NeoForge build needs Kotlin for Forge. There is also a Cobblemon Official Modpack in Fabric and NeoForge editions; the team recommends the Fabric one for performance, but it ships shader packs and other client-side extras, so a server usually runs the mod and its dependencies rather than the whole client pack.

Server load comes from spawning. Cobblemon keeps looking for places to spawn Pokémon around each player, and its main.json config controls how far and how often: maximumSliceDistanceFromPlayer (64 by default), ticksBetweenSpawnAttempts (20) and the size of the world slice it scans. Larger values mean more reliable spawns and more CPU time.

Cobblemon servers here run on high-clock CPUs with NVMe storage in Frankfurt, behind multi-Tbps Anti-DDoS, with support from our own team.

  • Fabric or NeoForge on Java 21

Cobblemon 1.8 is built for Minecraft 1.21.1 on both loaders. We set up Java 21 with Fabric API or Kotlin for Forge as the loader requires.

  • Spawning you can tune

Edit maximumSliceDistanceFromPlayer and ticksBetweenSpawnAttempts in main.json to trade spawn rate for TPS, then apply with /cobblemonconfig reload.

  • Open source, MPL-2.0

Cobblemon's code is public, so server owners can read exactly what a setting does instead of guessing.

  • Lean server installs

The official modpack includes shaders and client-side extras. A dedicated server runs the mod and its dependencies, which keeps startup and memory low.

  • Pokémon saved with the world

savePokemonToWorld is on by default, so spawned Pokémon are saved with the world. Scheduled backups protect every trainer's party.

  • Protection for public servers

Community Cobblemon servers attract attacks. Multi-Tbps filtering and our XDP layer keep them online.

How to make a Cobblemon server

From zero to online in four steps — no technical experience required.

  1. Pick Fabric or NeoForge

Fabric is what the Cobblemon team recommends for its modpack; choose NeoForge if your other mods need it.

  2. Install Cobblemon 1.8

Use the one-click installer, or add Cobblemon plus Fabric API (Fabric) or Kotlin for Forge (NeoForge) to a 1.21.1 server on Java 21.

  3. Tune spawning

Adjust spawn distance and attempt interval in main.json for your player count, then run /cobblemonconfig reload.

  4. Invite trainers

Players install Cobblemon 1.8 for the same loader, for example through the Cobblemon Official Modpack.

How our protection works

Cobblemon hosting questions, answered

How much RAM does a Cobblemon server need?

Cobblemon on its own is light: 4 GB handles a small group, 6 GB a public server of ten to twenty, and 8 GB or more a busy server or one with many extra mods. Cobblemon does not publish a server figure; its official modpack asks clients for 3 GB or more.

Is Cobblemon on Fabric or NeoForge?

Both. Cobblemon 1.8 ships separate Fabric and NeoForge builds for Minecraft 1.21.1. The Fabric build needs Fabric API; the NeoForge build needs Kotlin for Forge. The older 1.5.2 release covers 1.20.1 on Fabric and Forge.

Which Java version does a Cobblemon server need?

Java 21, because current Cobblemon targets Minecraft 1.21.1, which requires it.

How do I reduce lag on a Cobblemon server?

Start with spawning. Lower maximumSliceDistanceFromPlayer or raise ticksBetweenSpawnAttempts in main.json, then run /cobblemonconfig reload.

What is the difference between Cobblemon and Pixelmon?

Cobblemon is open source (MPL-2.0), runs on Fabric or NeoForge and uses the Showdown battle engine. Pixelmon is the long-running mod under an All Rights Reserved licence, now on NeoForge 1.21.1, with more than 1,000 Pokémon. Both need Java 21 on current versions.

Do you install Cobblemon for me?

Yes — Cobblemon is a one-click install from the panel with the dependency your loader needs. You can also upload the jars yourself.

Do players need the mod installed?

Yes, the same Cobblemon version for the same loader as the server. The Cobblemon Official Modpack is an easy way to get it.

How much does Cobblemon server hosting cost?

A Cobblemon server runs on our Minecraft plans, which start from €13.00 per month with one-click modpack install and Anti-DDoS included. Bigger packs and more players need more RAM, so choose the plan to match.
